Volunteer Spotlight: Jim Glaser

A Musical Ray of Sunshine: Jim Glaser’s Heartwarming Journey at Montefiore Nyack Hospital

We are delighted to shine a spotlight on a remarkable individual who has been a beacon of joy at Montefiore Nyack Hospital for the past six years. James “Jim” Glaser, a dedicated volunteer, has been serenading patients with his banjo and folk songs, creating a harmonious atmosphere that resonates throughout the hospital corridors.

Jim’s musical journey began over two decades ago. His unique talent was discovered by a local shop owner about eight years ago while he was playing outside of a bakery. This serendipitous encounter led to Jim’s regular performances at the shop and eventually paved the way for him to share his musical gifts during Nyack Festivals. As he played for the townspeople, he became a familiar and cherished presence in the community and a friend suggested he volunteer at Montefiore Nyack Hospital. Since then, Jim has been weaving melodies into the hospital’s atmosphere. After introducing himself, Jim likes starting with the heartfelt chords of “You Are My Sunshine.” Beyond the familiar tunes, he adds a touch of the unconventional to his repertoire, ensuring that patients are entertained and uplifted during their stay.

Jim’s banjo, with its four strings, becomes a vessel for the emotions he pours into his performances. A poet and songwriter, Jim also contributes his original compositions to the healing soundscape he creates. Reflecting on his experience, Jim shares, “It’s really knocked me over sometimes because some people weep when I sing. Seeing their sadness and struggles has had a profound effect on me and has really changed my life a whole lot.”

In the heart of Montefiore Nyack Hospital, Jim Glaser’s music not only entertains but also becomes a source of solace for those navigating challenging times. We extend our deepest gratitude to Jim for sharing his talents and for being a shining example of the transformative power of music in our lives.
