Shining a Light on Service:
Meet Chandra Gonsalves
Chandra Gonsalves embodies the spirit of service, bringing warmth, dedication and compassion to everything she does. Originally from Guyana, Chandra moved to the United States in 1988 and married her husband, John, the following year. Together, they built a beautiful family with three sons and one daughter, while Chandra balanced a thriving career and a deep commitment to giving back.
Chandra’s professional journey began in New York City’s bustling garment district, where she worked full-time as an office manager. When the family moved to Rockland County, she transitioned to a part-time position. It was during a routine trip to a local food market that Chandra’s next chapter began. She came across a magazine ad seeking hospital volunteers, and by the fall of 2023, she joined Montefiore Nyack Hospital’s dedicated volunteer team.
At the hospital, Chandra plays an instrumental role in helping high school students who apply for volunteering. She works diligently to review applications, help onboard new volunteers and ensure a seamless experience for the next generation of helpers. Her impact doesn’t stop there. For the past two years, Chandra and her husband, John, have been familiar and friendly faces at the Foundation’s Rides & Strides events, lending their time and energy to make these fundraisers a success. Continuing the family tradition of service, Chandra’s daughter is preparing to join the hospital’s volunteer program as well.
Beyond her work at Montefiore Nyack Hospital, Chandra has dedicated more than 20 years to volunteering every Saturday morning at a food pantry founded by her husband and two friends through their church. Her efforts have helped countless individuals and families access essential resources. In addition, Chandra serves as a tax aid for AARP, assisting community members with tax preparation during the busy tax season.
When she isn’t working or volunteering, Chandra indulges her passion for cooking and baking. Her latest culinary adventure? Perfecting the art of baking fresh, homemade bread—a skill that brings joy to her family and friends.
Chandra’s philosophy on life and service is as inspiring as her actions. “The world is not about you alone and what you do for yourself. It’s the people you help and how you give back that matters,” she shared. “I feel worthwhile in my soul when I’m volunteering.”
Her dedication is a testament to the power of giving and the joy that comes from helping others. We are so fortunate to have Chandra as part of our volunteer team, and we celebrate her extraordinary contributions to both our hospital and the broader community.
